Singapore Wines and the History of Wine

In Singapore, wine is always present in every special occasion like birthdays, Christmas celebration, New Year, wedding anniversaries and other holidays. Wine is a special beverage which comes from grapes. In the country, wines are commonly served in restaurants, usually in Italian and British food places.


In old times, grapes are known only in the coastal areas of the Caspian Sea and in Mesopotamia between 6,000 and 4,000 BC. That is why, only rich people can afford wines. In Egypt, wine is served in royalty and upper classes and is known as a man-made medicine.

When the Greeks learned how to make wine, it was enjoyed by the whole community which then became popular. The famous “father of medicine” Hippocrates, encouraged people to drink wine for it has health benefits. He claimed that wine is a good disinfectant.

However, when ancient Romans also learned the techniques on how to produce wine, it became popular all over the globe. In connection to wines, it is said in the bible that the two apostles, Paul and Timothy mentioned one health benefit of wine. It is stated there that drinking wine contributes to proper digestion.


In the 11th century, Persian Avicenna recognized that wine helped many people improve their digestion. During the middle Ages, Catholic friars are using wine for treatments. It is said that wine is very popular old times, because safe drinking water is rarely found.

Now, scientists continue to study about wines and they also study the claims that it is beneficial to a person’s body. With wines’ proven benefits, there’s no doubt that it is popular in the history. History shows that wines are proven to be beneficial, mostly in the body.
